Alternative Family Pets

We all know that dogs and cats can make great family pets, they are loving, attentive and you will find no more loyal companion than your pet dog. These pets however are not ideally suited for everyone and there are other types of animals which also make great pets.
If you have small children then guinea pigs can make great family pets, these animals also make great indoor pets so you do not need to have a garden. Guinea pigs are extremely fun little animals and you will soon recognise a unique personality for each “pig”, and they love meal times! Guinea pigs will learn to associate sounds with feeding so get ready to be greeted with a chorus of squeals each time you open the fridge!! Guinea pigs are very gentle creatures and are excellent first pets for children; just remember to supervise your children while they handle the guinea pigs.
For more exotic pets then you may want to investigate tropical fish and reptiles, these can be fascinating pets to keep due to their exotic nature. These pets however do require additional care and equipment (and this can bring additional costs), both fish and reptiles will require specialised housing – tanks for the fish and vivariums/terrariums for the reptiles. You will also need to re-create the natural habitats of these animals within the tanks and terrariums so heating equipment, tank heaters and specialised vivarium lighting will all need to be bought to ensure that the fish or reptiles are healthy and happy.
If you have some outdoor space then rabbits also make great pets, but they do require a lot of space to exercise. Some rabbits can be extremely attentive but others may not be so willing to be held, to ensure that your pet rabbit is comfortable when being held try to pick them up as much as you can when they are young and give them regular attention, hand-feeding pets can also be a great way of helping to make them comfortable around humans.
I hope you find this post informative and an insight into the range of pets beyond cats and dogs, I will stress though that all pets require time, attention and love to be healthy and happy.
